Known Coordinates, Unknown Location

Over Bilboquet ice cream last night, Annemarie proposed an idea. Spurred by people wearing t-shirts saying "Not all who wander are lost," she proposed that perhaps those people who proclaim being lost are actually not. Those who are lost, and know it, know where they are. They aren't actually lost. You feel me? Those people who don't even acknowledge the fact that they are, are, in fact, lost.

It sorta boggles and ravishes my mind.

Just randomly stumbled on this, but it reminded me of an exerience I had in the Julian Alps (the Southern part of the Alps which are in Slovenia). I was rambling around for a few days enjoying the views and at some point I met two Austrians who asked me where we were. I was not quite sure, but I showed them the general area on my topo map. They asked me where I was going and when I replied that "I do not know" they naturally concluded that I must be lost! They invited me to join them so that they could "help me". I could not get them to understand that I did not actually need any help. Each time that we met someone they would say that they had this guy here who is "lost". Despite all my efforts (in German, Italian, broken Croatian, whatever), I could not make it clear to them that although I did not know where I was, nor where I was going, I was not in fact "lost"! Eventually we found a family who spoke a bit of English, and they got a good laugh out of the situation. I joined the family for lunch and then went on my merry way....

Above all, I've discovered, it is a J.R.R. Tolkien quote from The Fellowship of the Ring!

How funny that you just randomly stumbled upon this post Zvi (how apropos, non?). And it really is quite amazing how directionlessness not being a bad thing can be misunderstood, even by people who do speak your language. But I am glad that someone understood!
